Opening of the De Kitesurf Matos Tarifa school!

Who are we?

Mat & Caro, two Belgians in Tarifa.

Together on land and on water, we have shared this love for water sports since the day we met, mainly through kitesurfing, but also scuba diving.

The idea of leaving our jobs and our life in Belgium did not happen on a whim. It’s a path we started a few years ago. After many trips back and forth to Tarifa, the desire to live there and do what we do best: teach kitesurfing!

We have for a long time given kitesurfing lessons in the North Sea, on the spots of Zeeland and Belgium. However, the harsh conditions, the cold and the greyness pushed us towards Tarifa, the kite paradise.

Since our arrival in Tarifa, we have had the opportunity to teach kitesurfing in several schools based in Tarifa. With the experience acquired, it seemed obvious to us that the time had come to open our own school.

Rather live our dreams than dream our lives.

Why Choose Tarifa?

It’s instant love at first sight for a region that brings together living conditions that we love!

Life at the edge of the ocean, contact with this grandiose immensity, sometimes calm, sometimes stormy. There is no visual routine when you are between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Every day is different. It’s like a theater whose decor is constantly changing.

The wind of course!

The geographical position of Tarifa is totally exceptional, the city of Tarifa directly faces the African continent and forms with the Strait of Gibraltar a bottleneck to the flow of the wind between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. With the arrival of windsurfing in the 1970s, and later kitesurfing, Tarifa has become one of the highest places for board sports enthusiasts.

Finally, in short, it blows all the time in Tarifa with more than 320 days of wind per year, we can not dream of better!

Moreover, do not hesitate to check the list of kitesurfing spots in Tarifa, very useful to select the best spot according to the announced wind conditions.

Why Matos - Tarifa?

Matos, comes from the name of the Shop in Belgium, it is undoubtedly the best kitesurf – windsurf and Wake shop in Belgium. Advice, quality and after-sales service at the top!

First customers for many years, we opened our first kitesurf school in Belgium in collaboration with Isa and Oli the managers of Shop Matos. Logically, our school was then called: Matos Kitesurf School

When we decided to open our school in Tarifa, we decided to continue this collaboration, this is how Matos Tarifa was born.

What characterizes us

With 8 years of practice teaching kitesurfing, we have acquired an expertise allowing us to know exactly what experience we want to offer our students.

An effective teaching method

Learning to kitesurf, whatever one says, is an investment that can be substantial. If we consider the hours of lessons needed to become totally independent and then the purchase of your kitesurfing equipment, it makes sense to seek to optimize the investment that the learning phase represents. The IKO pedagogy offers a powerful learning performance, everything is developed there to allow you to become an independent kitesurfer as quickly as possible thanks to step-by-step learning divided into modules from your first contact with the kite until the complete autonomy.

Profitability of learning: Your progress is directly linked to the effective practice time. Basically, every second spent in contact with your wing under the wise advice of your instructor develops your level.

This is why we mainly recommend the private lesson formula and why we do not offer group lessons. Even if the price per hour is much lower, remember that if you have to share a wing between 4 people during an hour of lesson, in reality your effective practice time is only 15 minutes.

Kitesurfing gear at the top!

The quality of the equipment, mainly the wings used during your learning, greatly influences your speed of progress. The feeling and the softness offered by the Neo and Evo wings of the Duotone brand are perfect for learning kitesurfing. These wings offer precise and predictable bar feedback that allows for obvious and quick handling.

The Tiki

The Tiki is a type of board imagined by Sylvain Maurin in 2013 and which creates more and more addicts in the world of kitesurfing. It is a large wooden board, most often paulownia, with shapes that are directly inspired by the very first Hawaiian surfboards.

The tiki offers a lot of advantages: a feeling of ample and soft gliding, an impressive ability to go upwind, a great lift allowing you to quickly learn strapless as well as a formidable weapon in light wind.

Matos Tarifa is the only school to offer tiki lessons as well as downwind and tiki hikes.
