Although the fall height is usually low, what is more impressive is the horizontal distance travelled above the water surface. Otherwise, the kite will not fully travel to the edge of the window (towards 12 o’clock) and will keep generating forward pull, which cancels the progress made during the body drag.

2 – On your side, not on your stomach!

You must position yourself on your side so that the water provides resistance. Your body replaces the board and allows an upwind trajectory with slight forward movement. If you lie flat on your stomach, the water flows underneath you and you drift downwind instead of progressing upwind.

3 – Trying to go too far upwind

Upwind progression should be done at an angle of approximately 15° to 30° maximum relative to the kite lines. Many riders, focused on their board left upwind, overdo the angle and lose all efficiency. In short, if you try to go too extreme (for example 90° to the kite lines), you will lose your upwind progress and effectively become an anchor — and it is not comfortable at all.

4 – Confusing speed and haste!

Taking waves in the face during a body drag while your board is far behind you is not the most enjoyable part of kitesurfing. However, doing body drag runs that are too short is also inefficient. Keep an eye on your board, stay relaxed, breathe, and commit to long enough runs to be effective.

5 – Train!

Okay, okay, it’s not the most fun exercise, but an efficient body drag to recover your board requires practice. Use a calm spot, drop your board several times, and go retrieve it faster and faster. With training, you’ll no longer stress about losing your board — you’ll always keep it in sight and recover it quickly every time.

Installing a GoJoe-type system

If despite everything, you are still afraid of losing your board, a GoJoe-style system from Ocean Rodeo is a practical accessory that makes your board visible from far away and also helps your kiteboard drift downwind more easily.

It is a buoy that attaches at the handle of your board and is easy to install, for roughly the same price as a retractable board leash — except it is completely safe.

(In terms of style, it’s the same: a leash is not any more elegant to look at than a buoy on a board).

If you are more into DIY solutions, you can create a similar system at a lower cost using for example a pool noodle, a ball inside a net, a national team armband… in short, be creative.

Why is the board leash always present?

Even though it has been gradually disappearing over the past 10 years, it can still be seen on kitesurf spots.

Is it the fault of kitesurfers?
No, certainly not.
